I tutor gifted/talented students who wish to dive more deeply into academic subjects. Prior to creating an individualized curriculum for each student, I research the subjects the student will be covering in school that year and intentionally do not work on those. It’s no fun to go into a subject in class and already have learned the information. Typically I will create units on subjects the student may have studied earlier, and provide additional depth into the subject through reading, writing, and many creative activities.
I also develop the curriculum based on student interest. For example, I have a student who loves science, and we spent the Fall doing a multitude of experiments and reading and writing about scientists and their discoveries. This Spring we are in the process of designing and building a complete town, which she originally designed on paper and is now creating in 3D with boxes, paint, and other creative endeavors. The project is an early architectural design project, but also includes math and measuring, as well as a good deal of city planning. In general, I find that most students need some sort of support in regular classroom activities, and I provide this for gifted/talented students as well, be it handwriting, math facts, and spelling.
