I love tutoring students in Mathematics, and was recently trained in Singapore Math. I use manipulatives, such as unifix cubes, base ten blocks and a Judy Clock, when the student is learning a concept and needs concrete tools. As with all my tutoring, I use as many senses as possible to make sure a concept “sticks.” We use art projects, such as creating our own enormous number line, to show place value. With another student, we created a fraction book with origami paper, to show how values can be divided into different parts. We sing our multiplication tables, as fun way to memorize them. It is an important part of math that student have facility with math facts, and I have set up an “incentive program” for math fact memorization. When student hit a certain goal, they get a little prize. It’s so much easier to do math when your math facts come easily to you. And in almost every math session, I use games to teach concepts and strengthen skills.
